On Wednesday a national initiative called "Spread the Word to End the Word" will take place. This initiative began three years ago and its goal is to educate people to stop using the word "retarded" and begin to use more respectful, people first language and create an environment of acceptance.
In collaboration with Mrs. McQueen's class some 4th graders at Avona Elementary made a video to help educate students about this initiative and being respectful.
Take a moment to watch the video and then sign the pledge.
The Lehigh Valley Polar Plunge is the biggest fundraising event for Northampton County Special Olympics as well as our neighboring Special Olympics programs ( Bethlehem City and Carbon, Monroe and Lehigh Counties). For our 2016 Polar Plunge, over 500 plungers took a dip into the frigid winter waters of the Delaware River. Additionally, we had a dedicated group of 25 Super Plungers who completed our 24 hour challenge at the Grand Eastonian Hotel in downtown Easton, PA.
This year we were excited to be joined by Lehigh Valley's own Indy Car Driver Sage Karem. Sage has been involved with Northampton County Special Olympics in the past as a peer buddy and was excited to take the plunge to support us. Additionally, "Becka and Malone" from Cat Country and "Josh and Scott in the morning" from WLEV were on hand to pump up the crowd and serve as the events emcees.
A special thank you to all our sponsors, plungers, fundraisers, volunteers and friends who made this event possible. Together we raised $TBA for Special Olympics PA, which is divided between the local programs.
